New Audi A4 saloon and Avant: pictures, specs and price list
2016 Audi A4 gets efficient new engines, high-tech interior and S4 performance model
Full details of the new Audi A4 range have been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It now includes a high-performance S4 version of both the saloon and Avant estate.
The new A4 has a lot to live up to, as the ever-improving BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class have kept the competition in this class fierce. The recent launch of the Jaguar XE and the eagerly anticipated Alfa Romeo Giulia saloons mean the new A4 has plenty of rivals to contend with.
The exterior design is an evolution of the previous car, with some sharper creases in the bodywork and a wider radiator grille. The interior has been subjected to a heavier redesign and the efficient engine range has been fully updated, too. A lighter body and new technology also help keep the A4 fresh.
The new Audi A4 is on sale now in the UK, priced from under £26,000. The S4 models will launch in spring 2016.
New Audi A4 2016 engines
Diesel engines are set to be the most popular with UK buyers and the new A4 will use 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels that are either brand-new or heavily revamped for the new car.
One of the four diesel models on offer will be the new 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI Ultra, which will be capable of 74.3mpg fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 99 grams per kilometre, making it free to tax. On average, the fuel economy of the new A4 engine range is up 21%, despite power gains of around 25%.
The Audi A4 will be available with three petrol engines, one of which will be a new 148bhp 1.4-litre TFSI that can return 57.6mpg and has CO2 emissions of 114g/km.
A 3.0-litre TDI V6 engine will also be available with either 215 or 268bhp. All new A4s will be available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a new seven-speed S tronic automatic.
The S4 performance model features a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 349bhp. 0-62mph is dealt with in just 4.7 seconds, with the S4 hitting an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Audi's quattro four-wheel drive will help put the power on the road and the S4 will be equipped with an eight-speed tiptronic gearbox that allows you to change gears using steering-wheel-mounted paddles. The S4 also comes with lowered sports suspension.
There have been rumours of two hybrid versions of the new A4, but so far there hasn't been any official word on this. However, it looks likely that an A4 e-tron will follow a little while after the new car goes on sale. We expect it to use the same 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine and electric motor as the A3 e-tron.
The 2015 Audi A4 saloon features the same narrow, angular headlights as the latest Audi TT coupe, as well as sharper lines plus Audi's latest radiator grille design. Frank Rimili, Audi exterior designer, told Carbuyer's sister site Auto Express that the new A4 is “sharp and more masculine”. It's longer than the outgoing A4, freeing up more head and legroom for passengers.
The S4 model features some very subtle styling tweaks – the most prominent of which are found at the back. Two sets of twin exhaust pipes are finished in chrome and set into a silver splitter, while there's a very small spoiler on the end of the bootlid.
It looks unlikely that this A4 will be offered with Audi's super-bright laser headlights, which so far have only been fitted to concept cars and a limited-edition version of the Audi R8 supercar, but normal LEDs and Audi's ‘Matrix LED’ headlights will be available as options.
Price and release date
Both saloon and Avant estate versions of the new Audi A4 are on sale now.
The new Audi A4 is priced from £25,900, with Avant estate models costing around £1,500 more. The S4 saloon and Avant estate models are set for an early 2016 launch, with deliveries arriving in the summer of the same year.
The four-wheel-drive Audi A4 Allroad and high-performance Audi RS4 models are likely to go on sale at a later date. A new Audi A5 coupe will follow the launch of the new A4 range, too.

Interior and specs
The Mercedes C-Class and Jaguar XE have brought new levels of luxury to this type of car, so Audi is keen to reassert itself as the brand that offers the best interiors in the car business. To that end, the new A4 features a totally redesigned centre console and dashboard and Audi will offer the car with the excellent 12.3-inch ‘virtual cockpit’ first introduced in the latest Audi TT.
The virtual cockpit can display speed, a rev counter and trip computer, along with sat-nav information and stereo settings. The system can show a navigation map across the whole of its 12.3-inch screen, providing clear information in your line of sight.
Another feature of the A4 borrowed from the TT is air vents with their own individual controls and temperature readouts. This allows each passenger to customise the air-conditioning setting for his or her area of the cabin.
The car will also come with a revamped version of Audi's MMI infotainment system, which uses a touchpad and voice commands to control the car's various functions. This cuts down on the number of buttons needed and combines with high-quality plastics and classy metal trim to make the new A4's cabin an even nicer place to sit than before.
The top-end infotainment system will be the MMI Navigation plus, which comes with MMI touch and a large 8.3-inch monitor.
The new Audi A4 will be available in SE, Sport or S line specification. Standard equipment across the range includes 17-inch alloy wheels, bright xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, the Audi smartphone interface, keyless go, Bluetooth connectivity, the Audi drive select system with a choice of driving modes, a seven-inch colour display and three-zone climate control.
The S4 model will have LED headlights and rear lights as standard, along with adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot and a Bang & Olufsen stereo system.
Low running costs are a top priority for the new A4, with Audi's head of technical project management telling our sister magazine Auto Express that “the next A4 will move the game on. The jump from today's car in terms of design and efficiency will be really big”.
New lightweight construction is an important part of this. The 2015 Audi A4 is all-new underneath, using a larger version of the latest Volkswagen Golf platform, which helps to make it up to 120kg lighter, depending on the engine. Super-strong hot-formed steels make for lighter components, too.
The new A4 will also come with plenty of safety and driver-assistance systems, including a new traffic-jam assistance system that’ll guide the car through slow-moving traffic at speeds of up to 40mph. There’ll also be an advanced cruise control system that can alter the car's speed for optimal fuel economy.
