RUF readying an electric Cayman
But isn't making an electric Cayman just sacrilege?
RUF announces plans to build an electric version of its modified Porsche Cayman, inspired by the Tesla Roadster
Legendary German tuner RUF has decided to go a bit Tesla and is currently in the process of developing an electric version of its tuned Cayman – the 3400K.
According to German mag Auto Motor und Sport, the electric RUF will feature a lithium-ion powered 201bhp electric motor, which sends 650Nm straight to the rear wheels.
It seems a bit strange talking about a RUF that will only do 124mph (the car that this new electric version is based on will crack 181mph), but while top speeds are pegged quite low, the motor’s torque ensures that 0-62mph is dealt with in less than four seconds – over four tenths faster than the petrol powered equivalent.
RUF reckons that the car will have a range of between 250 and 300km (155 and 186 miles) and will be rechargeable from a household plug socket. Expect an official announcement from RUF as soon as next month.
In the meantime, enjoy some video of competition winners getting passenger rides around the 'Ring with RUF's test driver, Stefan Roser:
RUF's cars are so heavily modded that it's recognised as a carmaker in its own right. But would you be seen dead in an electric Porsche?
