Updated Toyota Aygo to start from £9,695

Full UK pricing and specification details for the refreshed Toyota Aygo have been revealed, following on from its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It'll arrive in showrooms on 1 July, with prices starting from £9,695 for the basic 'x' trim level, which is the only one available with a choice of three or five doors; all others are five-door only.

The Aygo is a sister model to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 and also counts the Skoda Citigo, SEAT Mii, Volkswagen up!, Hyundai i10, Kia Picanto and Renault Twingo among its rivals.

New Toyota Aygo specifications

The 'x-play', starting from £11,375, boasts air-conditioning, steering-wheel stereo controls, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, an adjustable speed limiter, LED rear lights and Toyota's x-touch multimedia system with DAB and Bluetooth. Options include sat nav and Toyota's 'Safety Sense' package of driver assistance features.

Next up is the 'x-plore', starting from £12,360, with 15-inch alloy wheels, front foglights, automatic air-conditioning, automatic headlights, rear privacy glass, a reversing camera and sat nav. It can also be specified with a powered retracting canvas roof and the Safety Sense package.

Then there are the 'x-cite' (from £12,975) and 'x-clusiv' (from £13,895). The former gets two-tone paint, a matching interior, special seat fabric, body-coloured inserts for the air vents and gearknob and piano-black instrument panel and gearlever surround. Like the x-plore, it has 15-inch black alloys, front foglights, automatic air-conditioning, automatic headlights and rear privacy glass and Safety Sense is once again available as an option.

The x-clusiv builds on the x-play's specification with another two-tone paint scheme in a choice of three colours (black with silver roof or blue and silver with black roof). It has 15-inch alloy wheels with a twin-spoke design, seats with part-leather upholstery, automatic air-conditioning, keyless entry and start, Safety Sense and the x-touch multimedia system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard.

Finally there's the limited-edition (2,500 examples) 'x-press', starting from £12,630 and featuring a full roof decal and coloured accents for the front and rear lips and side sills, plus 15-inch black alloys. The specification also includes front foglights, automatic air-conditioning, automatic headlights, rear privacy glass and a reversing camera. Buyers can add either the connectivity package or navigation as an option, and can also specify Safety Sense.

Design

An update to the Aygo's bold design is top on the list of changes; the new versions retains the model's trademark ‘X’ grille and bumper, albeit with a fresh new look. At the rear, the new design incorporates LED tail lights. A new range of bright colours will be offered, along with new wheel designs for each trim level. Inside, the Aygo gets redesigned dials and new seat fabrics. Meanwhile, extra sound-deadening insulation has been added throughout to improve refinement on the move.

Engine

The Aygo’s three-cylinder petrol engine now has 71bhp, up from 68bhp, which propels the city car to 62mph in 13.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 100mph. An average fuel consumption figure of 72.4mpg has been quoted – up from the 68.9mpg offered by the outgoing model. The engine has been tweaked so that it meets Euro 6.2 emissions standards, with a reduction in CO2 emissions. An 'x-shift' automatic gearbox is an optional extra on all trim levels save the entry-level x.
