Mercedes S-Class AMG looks brash, goes like stink and has no fewer than 52 LEDs in each real light. Stick that in your fact pipe and smoke it
Shanghai 2009: Mercedes S63 and S65 AMG
Mercedes has chosen the Shanghai show to unveil its facelifted S63 and S65 super saloons. Why bother with a Maybach?
In line with the rest of the Mercedes S-Class range, the top-spec AMG versions have been given a spring clean.
Both cars stick with the same engines as before, so the S63 keeps its 525hp 6.3-litre V8, while the monster S65 retains its 612hp 6.0-litre twin turbo V12. Some software tweaks means that you get a three percent reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions though. They’re still going to drink like fishes though.
In order to make the poshest Mercs stand out, there’s a bling chrome grille, new mirrors and badges, and LED rear lights which fact fans will be delighted to note contain no less than 52 LEDs each.
So you don’t park your AMG in the nearest field, there’s a new system called Torque Vectoring Brake which automatically brakes the inside rear wheel when cornering to make the car turn in more keenly – very appropriate for a big barge like the S-Class – and a crosswind stabilisation system which improves high-speed stability. Funny that.
You can have your S63 in long or short wheelbase form, while the big S65 is a limo only. Snap one up from this June.
