We drive the BMW E30 with over one million miles
Back in 1990 Mobil bought a new BMW 325i and decided to test out their lubricant Mobil 1 by running the BMW for over 1 million miles. Basically they put the Beemer on a rolling road and left it there to run 24/7 for four years!
After the mileage had been clocked up they decided to strip the engine apart and lo and behold it was within factory specifications for a new engine. See video here.
I am a big fan of the E30 3-series and you really wouldn’t know (ignoring the big stickers…) that it had covered over 1 million miles. The car is practically concourse thanks to very few people actually driving it has a near perfect interior and some very tidy bodywork. Of course weather was kind to the BMW with the testing being carried out in America and being kept on a rolling road, it didn’t encounter any nasty salt or grit.
So what’s it like to drive? Well it’s absolutely mint, it has plenty of power and the auto gearbox is alarmingly good, it would even give some modern slush boxes a run for their money. It does feel slightly down on power from its original spec but it can still really shift and as I was reminded can be a bit of a handful if you get silly in the wet.
The one million mile BMW is a great way to prove the advantages of using premium oil in your car. Allowing people to try out their test car just proves how confident Mobil are of their product. For people that plan to keep their car for a while or worried about engine damage at track days the investment in a decent lubricant is well worth it. Just make sure you keep it topped up!
It may have over 1 million miles on the clock but the Mobil 1 BMW is practically concourse.
