Pair of Mercedes Benz CLK GTRs auctioned

Coming up for auction next month are a pair of CLK GTR road cars, built by Mercedes’ AMG department to homologate the FIA GT1 race car that subsequently won the championship in 1997, including almost every other race it entered.

Fitted with a mammoth 6.9 litre V12 producing 612hp, similar to the engine fitted in Pagani's Zonda, the road cars were built in very limited numbers including only five Roadsters, one of which is included in the upcoming RM London Auction.

Both the Coupe and Roadster are offered in brand new condition and both, interestingly, are right hand drive. Fitted with ceramic brakes and sequential six speed transmissions with paddle shifters, these two ‘uber-cars’ offer mouth-watering performance. Both cars were built to order for one clearly rather influential owner.

RM estimates the value at around a 1/3 of the original asking price, which in terms of long-term investment potential could signal a rather good bargain.

We’ll take the Coupe please, but prospective buyers beware; a race version famously performed a high speed back flip at Le Mans in 1999, although the driver Peter Dumbreck wasn’t seriously hurt.

The auction takes place on 28 October at the Automobiles of London event.
