Toyota Announces G Sports High Performance Brand with new FT-86 Concept

Remember the awesome candy red Toyota FT-86 concept from last year’s Tokyo Motor Show? Toyota has only gone and turned the concept up to 11 with this G Sports version.

The Tokyo Auto Salon is the equivalent of the SEMA tuning show in America. And by far the most interesting thing we’ve seen so far is Toyota’s plan to create a new series of modified performance cars under a brand called G Sports.

FT-86 gets Fast and Furious
And to make sure everyone takes notice, a whole host of G Sports models have been unveiled in Tokyo, headlined by the FT-86 G Sports concept. As you can see from the pictures, the FT has been given a thorough exterior makeover, including an uprated aero kit, carbon fibre bonnet and a big, LFA-style rear wing.

The concept also uses the JDM Subaru 2.0-litre turbo engine which drives the rear wheels. The rims themselves are rather nice 19-inchers, wrapped by sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE050 tyres.

The G Sports range
The FT-86 was just one of a whole range of concept G Sports models unveiled by Toyota. Two tuned people carriers, a tasty modded Mark X saloon and an uprated Prius with fared in rear wheels were shown off too.

GAZOO is Toyota’s M Division
Toyota’s racing partner GAZOO, which has entered the Lexus LFAs and ISFs in the Nurburgring 24 hour race over the last couple of years, will develop these specially modified models for production.

Japan only. For now.
For now, the G Sports brand will be a Japan only enterprise, but we’re hoping that the advent of the production version of the FT-86 to the UK will bring with it tuned Toyotas aplenty.
