Nokian summer tyres offer good grip in the wet
The Nokian eLine gets AA rating and starts from £65.
Nokian's WR D3 winter tyre placed joint fourth in our sister title Auto Express’ test last year, but motorists looking to replace their winter rubber in spring should consider the company's 2013 tyre range.
The eLine is the first Nokian summer tyre to get an AA rating on the label – so it should offer great grip in wet conditions and good fuel economy. It's designed for city cars, hatchbacks and small saloons, and comes in six different sizes ranging from 15 to 16 inches. Prices start at £75 for a 195/65R15 tyre.
Next in the range is the xLine, which is a good performer in the wet. It features unique X-Block sipes on its central ribs, as well as a separate swoop in the main grooves on the outer shoulder, both of which help to prevent aquaplaning. The xLine comes in 45 sizes from 14 to 17 inches. The cheapest (175/65R14) is £65.
Topping the range is the zLine – an ultra-high-performance tyre available in 31 sizes from 16 to 20 inches, and in speed categories W (168mph) and Y (186mph). The zLine is the successor to the Nokian Z G2, and features a new compound that doesn’t generate much heat. This helps it to stay structurally rigid and therefore last longer.
The zLine also has Nokian's DSI system. This consists of a water droplet symbol that will disappear when less than four millimetres of tread remains and there's an increased risk of aquaplaning. The zLine is a bit pricier than the rest of the range, starting at £110 for a 17-inch tyre.
