BMW M Performance diesel models
BMW has announced the arrival of three performance diesel models under the all-new 'M Performance' title.
The new 376bhp six-cylinder, 3.0-litre diesel engine uses three turbochargers and will be fitted to the BMW 5 Series, BMW X5 and BMW X6 models. The M Performance models are called M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d.
The M550d has 176bhp less than the current M5's V8 petrol engine, but overtaking power is huge - measuring 740Nm compared to the M5's 680Nm. What's more, the improvements in fuel efficiency are substantial - the M550d is more than 30% more fuel efficient and can do 44.8mpg and has emissions of 165g/km.
The M550d will be offered as a saloon and Touring estate, both capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in less than five seconds.
Sitting below the more expensive M petrol-engined models, M Performance cars also receive larger wheels and upgrades to the suspension, interior and bodywork.
Prices for the M550d will be revealed nearer the car's launch at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The X5 M550d will be priced from £60,325 and the X6 M50d will start at £62,260.
