Mercedes has revealed pricing for the new GL seven-seater off-roader, which starts from £59,465 for the diesel-powered GL350 AMG Sport model. Completing the two-model line-up is the 549bhp GL63 AMG, which costs £91,860.
The new car goes in to production in January 2013 and is mostly unchanged underneath the body compared with the old GL-Class. It's 21mm longer and has a boot that's 60 litres larger, though.
The engines are more fuel-efficient than before, but even the diesel isn’t that frugal, with fuel economy of 35.3mpg. Performance is impressive for a car as big as this, with acceleration from 0-62mph taking 7.9 seconds.
Equipment on the GL350 AMG Sport is a bit more generous than the old car, complete with LED daytime running lights, 21-inch alloys, a self-parking system and DAB digital radio. Mercedes offers two new colours: Cavansite Blue and Cinnabar Red.
The GL63 AMG is the performance model in the range and can accelerate from 0-62mph in a Porsche 911-rivalling 4.9 seconds. For the £91,860 price-tag, customers get leather seats that are heated and fitted with a massage function. A flat-bottomed AMG steering wheel complete with gear-changing paddles is also included.
With the high price tag come high running costs, too. The GL63 AMG only manages 23.0mpg and CO2 emissions of 288g/km will mean a particularly high road tax bill.
