BMW 3 Series GT hatchback (2013-2019) - MPG, running costs & CO2

A quick look at the figures confirms why the 2.0-litre diesel engine in the 320d version of the BMW 3 Series GT is so popular with buyers. It can return fuel economy of 56.5mpg (for both the manual and automatic gearboxes) and CO2 emissions of 131g/km for the auto and 136g/km for the manual transmission, placing it in either the 31% or 32% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) band for company car drivers. The four-wheel drive version is only available with an eight-speed automatic gearbox; it returns 53.3mpg and emits 141g/km of CO2, putting it in the 33% BiK band.

The BMW 330d GT and 335d GT are seriously fast, with the 330d returning 48.7mpg and the 335d 44.1mpg, despite the latter coming with fuel-sapping four-wheel drive as standard.

Despite their names, the BMW 320i GT and 330i GT both have a 2.0-litre petrol engine boosted by a turbocharger. All petrol-engined GT models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic – there’s no manual option. The 320i returns 44.8mpg and emissions of 143g/km, placing it in the 29% BiK tax band. If the 320i is equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive economy and emissions suffer, with figures of 41.5mpg and 156g/km and a 32% BiK rating.

The 330i GT, which replaced the 328i GT, returns 43.5mpg with emissions of 147g/km placing it in the 30% BiK tax band. The range-topping BMW 340i GT petrol model is the sportiest of all, but also the most expensive to run: economy drops to 37.2mpg, while CO2 emissions of 173g/km mean it’s in the pricey 35% BiK band for business drivers.

All BMW 3 Series GTs attract road tax of £140 a year, while those with a list price (including options) of more than £40,000 are liable for an additional surcharge of £310 a year in years two to six of ownership, bringing the annual bill to £450 during that period.

Insurance group

Insurance costs are broadly similar to the saloon’s, with the 320i and 320d models falling into groups 28 and 29 respectively, while the 330i sits in group 34. The 340i, 330d and 335d range between group 37 and group 40.

Warranty

All BMW 3 Series benefit from BMW’s three-year/unlimited-mileage warranty, which also includes breakdown recovery for the same period. As with rivals, it's possible to extend the duration of cover at extra cost.

BMW offers a pre-paid servicing scheme that can take care of regular maintenance for as little as £399 for three years/36,000 miles.
