BMW 3 Series GT hatchback (2013-2019) - Reliability & safety
The BMW 3 Series is a well engineered model and the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo should be just as well built
Sharing most of its parts with the BMW 3 Series saloon means the 3 Series GT should be reliable and enjoyable to own. It hasn’t been tested by Euro NCAP for safety, but we’d expect it to score full marks if it was. BMW offers a range of options that make the GT even safer – but they come at a price.
BMW 3 Series GT reliability
The BMW 3 Series range was rated just above average for reliability in our 2017 Driver Power owner satisfaction survey of cars currently on sale in the UK. In the 2018 Driver Power survey the BMW 3 Series ranked 39th out of 75 cars overall.
BMW finished in 21st place overall in the 2018 Driver Power survey – one place behind Mercedes and three spots behind Audi but significantly adrift of other premium manufacturers such as Jaguar and Lexus.
Safety
It’s unlikely EuroNCAP will crash-test the Gran Turismo, because it’s so similar to the standard 3 Series saloon, which scored the maximum five stars. The saloon scored 95% for adult occupant protection and 84% for child occupant protection. The car was awarded full points in the side-impact test and also protected its passengers well from whiplash in the event of a rear-end shunt. The £1,210 Active Security package includes driver assistance (which helps keep the car in lane on the motorway) and a blind-spot warning system.
