We bought a 640d in May 2014. It was a demo model with just 1700 miles on the clock and looks gorgeous in Estoril Blue with Ivory leather. It came with over £10K's worth of option such as 20inch alloys, sunroof, LED lights etc etc all of which make this car feel very special. Having driven Supercharged Range Rovers and Jags in the past it is great to have a car with such effortless performance but whilst maintaining fuel economy in the mid 30s and cheap road tax... True guilt free performance motoring. At a push it seats 4 adults, swallows lots of luggage, goes great and costs little more to run that a Mondeo. We love it to bits and it is certainly the best all round car we've owned.

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. It puts a smile in my face everytime i get in it, or see it. its Uberfast, quite practical (have two young kids on child seats). The challenge was to find child seats that can be fitted as the M Sport kit doesn't allow for the back headrest to be moved so the options are limited. It could be a lot more economical on MPG, but this isn't a pressing concern! The way I drive it (which is semi/ubran gives me around 30MPG (and does a 400/450 miles for a full tank). if more motorway I can definitely see this being a lot more economical. So far it has really cost me nothing to maintain (owning nearly a year). just its odd service and that's it. I bought it as a used approved from BMW, which could have been a better experience, but that's not the car's fault. Now with 25k miles on, I literally don't want to part with it EVER.

I will try to say it the way it is and not be too biased. This is a truly brilliant car! Bought mine pre-registered with 12 miles on the clock for £37,750 (was a 75k car)from BMW Cooper. I consider this the bargain of all time. Our cars say a great deal about us. At 51 years old I wanted something that said I was successful, but not upset my clients who might then question my fees, not worried about kids anymore, wasnt trying too hard and having a mid life crisis (Porsche) was happy in my marriage and yet look classy and distinctive. Any four door car was out. If I had to choose, I would probably have looked at a high spec Audi A7 (nice from the back, average from the front, or the grand coupe obviously. The 2017 640dM in grey with 20” wheels looks sensational. So low, so very wide and such an aggressive ‘Great White’ angry face. Very few cars can match its presence and most engaged motorists move over - it has got a ‘get out of my way’ profile. I never tire of looking at it. I do get irritated with the nonsense reviews you read. Rear legroom is the first criticism. Who is buying a Coupe for rear legroom? Coupe’s were never designed to put 4 people in them so look elsewhere if this is your ‘beef’ or buy the grand coupe which by all accounts is equally brilliant. I wanted a car that said I don’t care less about rear passengers. Even so, my two teenage boys who are both 6 foot squeeze in from time to time behind me and I am 6’2”. So what is the issue unless you are even taller? Comparing it against a Jag or 911 is quite laughable in my opinion - frustratingly it always is. The BMW is spacious in every practical way possible. In addition, the 640d is such a great sounding unit combined with 41mpg when in my hands. This has been achieved around the rubbish roads of Norfolk and Suffolk and rarely do I get a chance to sit on a motorway where in dynamic eco I have always seen in excess of 47 mpg with an eye on the ever increasing intolerance of over speeding by the police. What other beautifully proportioned car can achieve 0-100kph in 5.3 and return these insane fuel figures? This is why comparison to other brands is futile. No other coupe can compare. There is nothing in this class that has these abilities. A 911 has double the running costs, not only in fuel but servicing. The ride is harsher too and performance led. Great if you don’t mind that. Sick inducing if you do. And where do you put anything? Your expensive phone, your drinks, your food? The 6 series is designed to get to Monaco in a day and get out without fatigue. The interior is arguably comparable to any car at any price. It is sumptuous and from experience, a NON STOP 400 mile trip is easy...if not always on the bladder. Everyone who sits in the car is gobsmacked. It is so beautifully put together, leather everywhere; dials, lights and info bombard the senses. Fast cornering is easy (in the dry) and many hot hatches have struggled to keep up in my more determined moments, especially when powering out of a corner with such vast torque on tap. Anywhere with dual lanes and roundabouts is an absolute hoot. I love the late breaking ability, the sensational 8 speed gear box and the ability (in the dry especially) to power out of the roundabout and see within seconds you have left everything behind you and put yourself in danger of speeding tickets if you are not vigilant in watching the speedo. This is made easier with the head up display which is perfect. On the up side is the very practical boot too. Really decent size. The reversing camera that pops up out of the badge. The heads up, the idrive system, the fantastic speaker system, the seats, the banquet size width of the interior that makes you feel like you utterly cocooned. The 10” display with everything you can think of plus a chat with BMW if you have a question about anything! It is all very easy to live with and respect. It feels unbreakable. Downsides...bad roads induce some tyre noise into the cabin but never to the point I worry about it. I have 20” tyres fitted so this is understandable and common on almost all cars with large tyres. What’s the big news? Anyone surprised at this? Most of our roads have enormous craters now and it is useful to avoid them otherwise you will experience a severe ‘thud’ that is alarming. This can prove unpleasant and is worse than my previous 630I which had even wider tyres at the back(?). Other than that, the ride is pleasant. My wife is easily car sick but does not complain unless I start hooning around. To put this into context, we drove a 235i, a 535d and a 435i and all of them performed very poorly in comparison on the roads in Norfolk. The 6 series does a much better job at cosseting you overall and has a cabin the others can’t match. Power - we all love it but in this car on a damp day overtaking or powering away from a junction can induce wheel spin up to 65mph! I can’t say I enjoy this aspect and will seriously consider winter tyres next year. My friends in Germany tell me this will make all the difference. Finally the width of the car. It is damn wide. Worryingly so at times in tight, single lane oncoming traffic can produce real anxiety. Parking with the camera built in all around is easy and a pleasure however. I would suggest these are a must to reduce high blood pressure. However, all things considered, this is a masterpiece of engineering. Don’t take my word for it. Drive it. See how it makes you feel. I find it pretty intoxicating. I have no idea what I would replace this with in a few years time. For the money I paid, it is crazily competitive. At double the price it would still be my choice.

I do not understand why other 640d drivers are only getting 30+mpg. If i push mine hard I still get late 30s, normal driving I average 45mpg. After 40,000 miles I have suffered no problems at all, everything works as it should and boy does it all work well. It's cheap to run and tax with the only downside being the rear tyres not lasting, but that is more to do with my right foot than the cars fault. If you want a solid coupe that looks very good and wont cost the earth to run then look no further, and you will get admiring looks into the bargain. To summarise, looks / reliability and a whole lot of fun all in one package.

Nice car, mine was M Sport, nice interior, reversing camera all good. Bad News with the car was mainly the gearbox and electric parking brake. I left it to find it had gone down the drive on its own, smashing through large gates. BMW's explanation was its impossible to do this. This is the issue I've had with the 8 Speed Gearbox. When car engine is warmed up or has least covered at least five miles when in traffic, if you leave the car in drive with your foot holding the brake to allow the car to gradually creep forwards, you will experience the whole car starts to rock from side to side, quite violently at times. BMW Blackburn evaluated this and found it would do this in economy and economy plus, but not sports as the engine management raises the engine speed. The supplying dealer wouldn't admit to the presence of a fault.

Very smooth power delivery and the 4 setting box allows you to switch between pedestrian mode and mind boggling madness. Electrics have been faultless as is the comfort and space in the front. Poor room for rear seat passengers but I rarely have more than one passenger with me so not a great factor for me. The ride can be hard but as a long-term Caterham 7 owner, it's not a problem for me. Having tested the 540d & 740d however, the harshness of the 6's ride is noticeable.
