Hyundai i40 Tourer estate (2011-2019) - Interior & comfort

On the motorway, the Hyundai i40 offers a comfortable ride, so making progress is smooth. The driving position gives you a decent view of the road ahead, and there’s lots of space for front and rear occupants. The engines are quiet and smooth, and there’s not much wind or road noise to interrupt the calmness, either.

The i40 Tourer boasts a budget price tag, but there’s little evidence of cost-cutting inside. The dashboard is stylish and uses plenty of materials that feel pleasant to touch. Like most models in this class, there’s a screen mounted in the dashboard and there aren’t too many buttons – while those that remain are logically placed and well labelled.

Equipment

There’s plenty of standard equipment fitted to the i40 estate. Even the entry-level model comes with air-conditioning, alloy wheels, automatic headlights, Bluetooth phone connectivity, front and rear electric windows and electric door mirrors, plus a stereo with a CD player and USB connectivity. Given the car's reasonable starting price, this amount of equipment certainly doesn't raise any complaints.

For an extra £2,000, you can step up to our top choice, SE Nav trim. For that additional outlay, you get cruise control, sat-nav, dual-zone climate control, electrically folding door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat with manual height adjustment, DAB digital radio and automatic wipers.

SE Business costs an extra £1,500 and includes upgraded ventilated leather seats, keyless entry and a reversing camera.

The Premium model offers a wide range of upmarket features for a further £2,600, although it pushes up the price of the 'budget' i40 a bit too much. Even so, it adds the likes of a glass panoramic sunroof that both slides and tilts, plus an electric tailgate.

Options

Just about the only option that’s available for the Hyundai i40 estate is the choice of metallic or pearlescent paint at £585. On the range-topping Premium model, you can choose to add a Visibility Pack, which includes active Bi-Xenon headlights, headlight washers, smart high beam and a speed sign recognition system. There are, however, a range of dealer-fit options, including bike racks, a dog guard, a roof box and floor mats.
