Hyundai i40 Tourer estate (2011-2019) - Practicality & boot space

The Hyundai i40 Tourer is attractively styled from the outside, but that comes at a price inside. The thick, sloping windscreen pillars create some large blind spots and the narrow rear window is hard to see out of – not least because it seems such a long way behind you.

Plenty of places to store bits and bobs help make the i40 Tourer that little bit easier to live with. There’s a large storage bin between the front seats and the pair of cup-holders near the handbrake has a cover allowing you to keep bits out of sight. There’s a storage space in front of the gearlever, too.

If carrying bottles is your thing, you’re in luck, because the front door pockets are big and deep and able to swallow a one-litre water bottle. A big glovebox repeats that trick, and if you choose a Premium model, it’ll have a handy cooling function, too.

There’s plenty of space inside for four adults, and thanks to excellent head and legroom in the rear, five can travel in reasonable comfort. The middle seat in the rear is bigger than the average, while wide footwells mean there’s enough room for three pairs of feet. Plus, the outer two passengers can slide their feet under the front seats for even more comfort.

Boot space

The boot measures 553 litres with the rear seats up and 1,719 litres with them folded down. These figures can't match the Skoda Octavia Estate, but are more than the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer offers.

Although the boot opening is wide and there’s no lip to lift luggage over, the i40’s boot isn’t as practical as some of its rivals. The wheelarches intrude into the load space and the seats don’t quite fold fully flat. Underfloor storage helps, though.

Towing

The 139bhp version can haul an 1,800kg braked trailer or an unbraked trailer weighing up to 700kg. Choose the 114bhp version or the automatic gearbox and the braked-trailer weight limit is cut to 1,500kg.
