The Lexus IS is a less obvious choice when it comes to buying a small, upmarket saloon car. However, its build quality and reliability easily matches that of rivals, including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Cars are well equipped and offer optional touchscreen controls and satellite navigation. The dealer network is renowned for its customer focus, and models hold their value well. Although discontinued, the IS 200d is by far the most popular version, but it can’t match the performance or fuel economy of the BMW 3 Series.

Pros:
- Capable cruiser
- Enough space for four
- Great reliability and dealers
-
Cons:
- Only one engine, and it feels slow
- Fuel economy not great
- More expensive than premium rivals
It's quite easy to pass off the Lexus IS 250 C as a bit of a ‘me too’ car, because Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi all offer similarly sized convertibles. Unfortunately, while the IS250C turns heads, it's not much fun to drive and there's only one thirsty petrol engine available… Its rivals all offer diesel power and better handling, too.
