Despite the fact that it’s a few years old, the Mazda is still one of the better MPVs to drive and feels relatively good fun in the corners. The car’s elevated driving position means you get a good view of the road ahead and light steering makes the car easy enough to manoeuvre in town. Get up to speed, though, and you’ll notice some wind and road noise.

The petrol is the sprightlier engine, but it comes at a cost to fuel economy. The diesel is still a better bet, as it’s more suited to people-carrying duties. It’s a simple choice of either performance or economy.

Mazda5 petrol engine

The 2.0-litre petrol is pretty gutsy and provides a decent amount of power. The 148bhp available will be more than what most drivers will need and provides a little peace of mind when you’re going for an overtaking manoeuvre. The 0-62mph time of 11 seconds is pretty decent for a car of this size, so you won’t feel like you’re driving a van. You’ll need to make plenty of gearchanges to maintain that solid progress, though.

Mazda5 diesel engine

The low-down power from the diesel engine means it makes a lot more sense than the petrol in a car like this – plus it’s more economical. It does a better job of hauling your children and gear and performs well carrying a full load. The 13.7-second 0-62mph time isn’t anything to shout about, but the diesel is the more sensible option for an MPV, where acceleration isn’t usually a high priority.
