Perodua
Perodua is a budget brand from Malaysia that specialises in small, cheap cars. The firm sells two models in the UK, called the Kenari and the Myvi, and both a supermini MPVs.
Perodua Myvi
The Perodua Myvi is a rebaged version of the Daihatsu Sirion, and is one of the cheapest new cars on the road. There’s a single engine choice – an 86bhp 1.3-litre petrol, and two equipment levels: SXi which comes with a manual gearbox or EZi, which comes with an automatic. The Myvi is best suited to town driving, and struggles on the open road. Comfort and the whole driving experience fall some way behind rivals like the Fiat Panda. The Myvi does feature a decent, spacious interior, which is well designed and laid out, and has plenty of equipment as standard.
Perodua Kenari
The Perodua Kenari is a boxy MPV designed to compete with the Honda Jazz, albeit with a much cheaper price. Considering the cost, the Kenari is surprisingly well equipped, with a CD player, electric windows and driver and passenger airbags all included as standard. However, while the interior is spacious, it’s badly dated and made from very poor quality, hard, shiny plastic. Just one engine is available, a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol, with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. Around town the Kenari can just about keep up with traffic, but its tiny engine can’t cope on the open road and produces a deafening noise.
