Peugeot 207
The 207 is Peugeot's answer to the Renault Clio and Ford Fiesta. Despite being a relatively old design now, the 207 is still an impressive all-rounder, with neat styling, excellent diesel engines and good handling. The 207 also benefits from Peugeot's improved attention to detail over interior build quality, making the supermini's cabin feel upmarket. As well as the three and five-door hatchback models, a more practical SW estate version and stylish CC convertible are also available.
- pros:
- Versatile and spacious boot
- Cheap to run
- Wide engine range is competitively priced
- cons:
- Notchy gearchange
- Limited rear seat space
- Cabin looks a little dated
Peugeot's 207 Estate is badged the SW. Crucially, it's 119mm longer than the five door hatchback - and it's worth noting that all of this extra length is added behind the rear wheels. The boot's 337-litre capacity might not sound particularly impressive, but it's worth noting that the 207's load space is as well thought out as that of many premium estates. There are boot runners, tie hooks, plus six-litres of shallow underfloor storage. Peugeot also offers separate opening tailgate glass and a low 555mm sill height, which makes loading bulky items much easier. Best of all is the rear seat mechanism – pull a single lever, and the backrest flips forward and the base lowers to create a flat 1,258-litre load area.
- pros:
- Good quality interior
- Comfortable ride
- Handles well
- cons:
- Cramped rear seats
- Expensive compared to rivals
- Looks awkward from some angles
The Peugeot 207CC is a small and stylish convertible supermini that boasts a fully electric folding hard-top roof. It's a comfortable cruiser and more secure than its canvas topped rivals too. Three engines are available, with two 1.6-litre petrol units – one turbocharged and one not – and a diesel engine with 110bhp. The Peugeot does claim to be a four seater, but the back seats are incredibly cramped, even for children. On the road, the 207CC handles well and is comfortable too.
- pros:
- Good looks
- Powerful and frugal diesel engines
- Cabin materials feel good quality
- cons:
- Short on rear seat and boot space
- Below average reliability
- Folding the rear seats can be fiddly
The Peugeot 207 is good to drive, but it's also comfortable and quiet at most speeds. Peugeot has worked hard on this car's safety features, so it comes as no surprise that all versions offer a very impressive Euro NCAP score. Running costs are low and the Peugeot is priced competitively against rivals including the Fiat Punto Evo and Renault Clio.
