Suzuki Jimny SUV - MPG, running costs & CO2 (2018-2020)

One petrol engine returns reasonable economy thanks to Suzuki Jimny's light weight

MPG, running costs & CO2 Rating

2.5 out of 5

The Jimny is only available with a four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol engine. Rather unusually for new engines designed in the modern era, it isn’t turbocharged. This is offset, to an extent, by the Jimny’s small size and relatively low weight, but economy still isn’t a strong suit, particularly as it’s four-wheel drive only.

Suzuki Jimny MPG & CO2

When equipped with the five-speed manual gearbox, the Jimny claims official fuel economy of 35.8mpg with CO2 emissions of 178g/km, under new WLTP test guidelines. If you opt for the four-speed automatic, efficiency drops to 32.2mpg, and the CO2 emissions rise to 198g/km. These figures don’t make the Jimny an appealing company car; sitting in the top 37% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) category.

The Jimny's Dacia Duster rival is similarly priced and manages a more reasonable 43.5mpg with CO2 emissions of 149/km. It also offers a diesel engine, and the 1.5-litre Duster can return 60.1mpg, with CO2 emissions of 115g/km.

Insurance

We don’t yet have insurance groups for the latest Jimny, but the previous model was also available in two trim levels, which fell into groups seven and nine. We expect the new one to be rated very similarly.

Warranty

Suzuki offers a three-year/60,000-mile warranty with the Jimny, which is standard for the industry, if a little unexceptional. Toyota offers a five-year/100,000-mile warranty on the RAV4, for example, while Kia offers a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty with the Sportage.

Servicing

The Jimny needs servicing every 9,000 miles. A fixed-price servicing plan is available, and allows you to pay up front or in monthly instalments for three years’ worth of servicing.
