The Astra VXR was designed with speed and performance in mind, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to read that economy isn’t great and running costs are higher than they would be for less powerful hatchbacks.

Vauxhall has worked hard to keep the Astra VXR's running costs as low as possible, but there’s only so much you can do to make a hot hatchback efficient. Stop-start technology improves the car’s economy figures by turning the engine off while stationary at traffic lights, but the official figure is still only 34.9mpg, with CO2 emissions of 189g/km. That means a hefty road tax bill of £265. You’ll also find yourself replacing front tyres on a fairly regular basis if you make the most of the car's considerable performance.

Insurance groups

As you’d expect of a car with as much power as the Astra VXR, insurance isn’t particularly cheap. Almost all standard Vauxhall Astras are rated lower than insurance group 20, but the VXR is in group 35.

Warranty

Vauxhall offers a three-year/60,000-mile warranty with all its new cars. That’s the same as manufacturers like Ford, Volkswagen and SEAT, but it’s also shorter than those offered by Renault, Kia and Hyundai.
