MPG, running costs & CO2 Rating

3.0 out of 5

Vauxhall Meriva running costs vary enormously, but Vauxhall promises more than 60mpg from its diesel engine. Be cautious when considering an automatic gearbox, though – it’s only available with the 118bhp petrol engine and increases CO2 emissions and fuel consumption dramatically.

Vauxhall Meriva MPG & CO2

The running-costs champion in the Vauxhall Meriva range is the 1.6-litre CDTI diesel with 134bhp. This is now the only diesel engine available for the Meriva and manages 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 116g/km, bringing the Meriva into the 25% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) bracket for company car users. You can only have it with a six-speed manual gearbox and on the Club model and above.

Because the least powerful 99bhp engine saves nothing in running costs, we recommend paying the extra to secure the 118bhp version. Fuel consumption actually improves to 47.9mpg, although CO2 emissions of 139g/km don't impress and result in a 24% BiK. This is also the only engine available with an automatic gearbox, but that reduces fuel economy to 39.8mpg, as well as increasing emissions drastically to 166g/km, meaning £200-a-year road tax.

The most powerful manual-only 138bhp 1.4-litre Turbo manages 44.8mpg, but its 149g/km of CO2 place it in the costly 28% BiK bracket.

You can expect to get a decent discount off the list price of a new Meriva. The bad news is that it loses a lot of value on the used market compared to the Ford B-MAX. The Vauxhall is only expected to retain around 30% of its value after three years and 36,000 miles. In comparison, a Ford B-MAX will retain around 40%.

Insurance group

The Vauxhall Meriva’s insurance groups range from 9 to 15 for petrol-engined models, depending on how much power the engine makes and what trim you choose. The 1.6-litre diesel engines vary from group 13 to 17. Meriva insurance prices are likely to be generally higher than those for a Hyundai ix20 or Ford B-MAX.

Warranty

Like the rest of its range, the Vauxhall Meriva is sold with a three-year/60,000-mile warranty, which is no more than average. The Hyundai ix20 has a five-year warranty, while the Kia Venga comes with a seven-year warranty.

Servicing

Vauxhall offers fixed-price servicing for the Meriva, starting from £129, and has also fixed the price for supplying and fitting common wear-and-tear items such as brake pads (£99), the cambelt (£209) and the clutch (£529).
