Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life

The Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life is a van-based people carrier, but it's priced at a level that's higher than other budget-minded models such as the Citroen Berlingo and Renault Kangoo. Because of its van roots, the Caddy is extremely spacious, and has room for seven inside. Sliding rear doors mean access to the back is easy, but you have to remove the seats completely to take advantage of the Caddy's maximum boot capacity. There are three diesel engines available: a 102bhp 1.6 and a 2.0-litre unit with 110bhp or 140bhp - the former of these comes with four-wheel drive.

  • pros:
  • Enormous load area
  • Seats seven adults with ease
  • Quiet, comfortable cruiser
  • cons:
  • Frumpy styling
  • Interior lacks flexibility of proper MPVs
  • Not as affordable as rivals

Boxy styling means there's space for seven in the Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Life. Hard wearing plastics and sliding side doors belie its van roots, but build quality is on a par with VW's cars, and there's plenty of kit available, too.  However, the Maxi Life feels like a large car when you're driving it, and the smallest diesel offered will struggle with a full complement of passengers on board. VW's van-based people carrier is far from being a budget model, too, with prices significantly more than other van-based rivals.
