Volvo S40
The Volvo S40 looks as fresh now as it did at its 2004 debut, thanks to some cutting edge, yet equally tasteful, design. Most notable is the classy centre console inside, which features unfussy, intuitive stereo and heating controls. The S40 has enough cabin space for family buyers, but practicality is hindered by narrow access to the boot. The trim and engine ranges are extensive, while the DRIVe models offer staggering fuel economy.
- pros:
- Smart cabin design using good materials
- Lots of engine and trim level choice
- Impressive economy of DRIVe version
- cons:
- Servicing costs are high
- Saloon format really limits practicality
- Rear headroom is lacking
There are seven engines and a complicated trim line-up for potential Volvo S40 buyers to negotiate. Thankfully, all the engines are appealing in one way or another, either because of exceptional fuel economy, refinement or high performance. The DRIVe model averages 72.4mpg but isn’t quick, while the 31.4mpg T5 is positively rapid. Regardless of specification, all S40s share a classy feel and are comfortable and spacious inside, if never particularly exciting to drive.
