The refreshed model will rival the recently updated MINI Convertible and the forthcoming Toyota GR86 sports car.

The biggest update for the 2022 MX-5 is the introduction of the new Kinetic Posture Control (KPC) stability control system. This is capable of applying the brakes on the inside wheels or rear wheel during fast corners, helping to push the car into the road to reduce body lean. Mazda says the system operates automatically in the background and doesn’t detract from the car’s direct driving experience.
Mazda has also added a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint finish to the options list for 2022.
Elsewhere, the specification of the MX-5 remains unchanged. The entry-level 130bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine is available in SE-L and Sport trims, and manages 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 127mph. The larger 182bhp 2.0-litre engine is offered in Sport Tech and range-topping GT Sport Tech guises, and offers improved performance going from 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 135mph. Fuel economy figures are quoted at 40-44mpg across both engines, with CO2 emissions ranging from 142g/km to 171g/km.
Rear-wheel drive is standard on all models, along with a six-speed manual gearbox. The RF hardtop model can be specced with an optional automatic gearbox with the larger 2.0-litre engine.
