The ASX suffers from wind, road and tyre noise when driving on the motorway or accelerating, too. The raised seating position gives a good view of the road ahead, but that high bonnet can make it a little tricky to judge where the front of the car is.

The inside of the ASX suffers from rather too much dark plastic, which can make the car feel a bit oppressive. Standard privacy glass blocks light from reaching the back seats, too. The interior does feel built to last and some soft-touch materials have been added around the dashboard and doors as part of a facelift.

The ASX offers reach and rake adjustment for the steering wheel, which makes it easy to get comfortable behind the wheel and find a good driving position. The dashboard is simply designed, with clear controls and a prominent central infotainment display.

Equipment

There are two trim levels, called Dynamic and Exceed. The list of standard equipment includes LED headlights, a rear-view camera, climate control, heated front seats and cruise control.

Costing around £3,000 more, Exceed adds a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, sat nav, chrome trim and extra safety kit.

The eight-inch infotainment system boasts DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and TomTom mapping in the Exceed model. Outside, you'll find 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights and privacy glass.

Options

With so much standard equipment, the only things left on the options list are metallic paint and the normal range of dealer-fit accessories.
