2015 Porsche Boxster Spyder unveiled

Top of the range lightweight roadster announced in time for New York motor show

Porsche will unveil the new flagship of the Boxster range, the Porsche Boxster Spyder, at this year’s New York Motor Show.

The new Spyder model has a mid-mounted 3.8-litre petrol engine, capable of producing 375bhp. That means a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 180mph. A unique trait of the Spyder model is that the only available gearbox is a six-speed manual. All of this means a claimed fuel economy figure of 28.5mpg.

The two-seat roadster features classic design nods to Spyder-branded Porsches of old. The streamlined bulges that slope down from behind the head restraints are a tribute to the 718 Spyder of the sixties, which was a lightweight racing car driven by the likes of Stirling Moss.

The design of both the front and rear of this new hardcore Boxster model is inspired by the high-performance Porsche Cayman GT4 coupe.

A key characteristic of the Spyder model is that it’s described as a purist sports car, designed to be a tool for driving without any excess fat. To make sure this is the case, Porsche has ensured that it’s as lightweight as possible, so the only roof option available is a “partially-manually” operated fabric one.

If you want air-conditioning or even a radio as standard, you’re out of luck, too. However, you can have one or both of these as a no-cost option. If you fancy one of Porsche’s Communication Management systems, that option is also available and will add £2,141 to the price tag.

Inside, occupants are treated to sports bucket seats and Porsche’s usual high-grade interior build quality.

The Boxster Spyder is designed to sit above the GTS trim and will be priced from £60,459. The model is available to order now and deliveries will start in July – just in time to take in the latter half of the summer months.
