The new Volvo S60 will cost from £37,920

The US-built Volvo S60 saloon will launch in R-Design Edition spec in May

Volvo has confirmed that its all-new S60 saloon will be priced from £37,920 when it goes on sale in the UK this May. The Volvo S60 will be a rival to the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4 and Jaguar XE when it arrives, and will be launched in sporty R-Design Edition trim level.

The S60 R-Design Edition features sports styling with an aggressive body kit, large exhaust pipes and big 19-inch alloy wheels and lowered, firmer suspension. This theme continues inside, with a black headliner, metal mesh interior trim and heated sports-style front seats, partly trimmed in Nappa leather.

As standard the R-Design Edition includes an array of the latest interior technology including a head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium surround-sound audio system and a heated steering wheel. As per other Volvo models, the S60 gets a large portrait Sensus Connect touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

As you’d expect for a Volvo the new S60 comes as standard with a comprehensive safety kit list including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, rear collision mitigation and Volvo’s Pilot Assist, which is capable of controlling the car’s acceleration and braking, assisting with the steering while maintaining the correct speed, position in lane and distance from the car in front when driving in traffic.

The only engine available at launch will be a 247bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine. Badged T5, it sends the power through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to the front wheels. This engine returns between 35.3 and 39.8mpg, yet propels the S60 from 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.

Further engine and trim options will be announced in the coming months, including an expanded range of petrol engines, along with further trim level options including an entry-level ‘Momentum’ model and a luxury ‘Inscription’ variant. The new S60 is also the first Volvo not to be offered with a diesel engine.

Volvo will also introduce a factory tuned ‘Polestar Engineered’ S60 variant, that will boast a number of upgraded performance parts including lightweight alloy wheels, a restyled interior, uprated suspension and larger, more powerful brakes. It will be powered by the twin-charged 400bhp ‘T8’ drivetrain, which consists of a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor giving it a 0-62mph time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.
