Hyundai Kona Hybrid launched

New Hyundai Kona Hybrid undercuts hybrid Kia Niro by around £2,000

The new Hyundai Kona Hybrid is on sale now, with a starting price of £22,495. The Hybrid will bridge the gap between the regular Kona model, powered by 1.0-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines, and the Hyundai Kona Electric.

The Kona Hybrid is the latest electrified model in Hyundai’s line-up after the Kona Electric and the recently refreshed Hyundai Ioniq range. The Kona’s petrol-hybrid powertrain consists of a 104bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a 1.56kWh battery, which together produce 139bhp. It’s already in use in the Ioniq, and power is delivered through a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Zero to 62mph takes 11.2 seconds, and the top speed is 99mph.

Hyundai Kona Hybrid specifications

The entry-level Kona Hybrid comes in SE trim for £22,495, representing a premium of nearly £3,900 over the standard Kona. The Kona Hybrid is almost £2,000 less than the Kia Niro Hybrid, the closely related car from Hyundai’s sister brand.

The SE model comes with climate control, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors with a camera, lane keep assist and driver attention alert. The optional SmartSense 1 safety pack comprises Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cycle recognition, and advanced cruise control.

Model-specific 16-inch alloy wheels and Blue Drive badging mark out the Hybrid as a separate model in the Kona family. Hybrid differences continue inside, with white accents around the air vents, gear lever surround and white seat stitching.

The Kona Hybrid in Premium trim costs £24,295 and comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen with sat nav, which also features Bluelink telematics, a smartphone app-based connected car service. This allows owners to unlock the doors remotely and can also remind them where they parked their car.

Premium trim also includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a KRELL sound system, keyless entry with start/stop button, privacy glass, wireless charging, automatic windscreen wipers and front fog lamps.

Optional on Premium trim is the SmartSense 2 safety pack, which includes AEB, SCC with stop and go function, Intelligent Speed Limit Warning (ISLW) that displays the current speed limit to the driver on the instrument cluster and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

The top spec Premium SE starts from £27,195 and features LED headlamps with high beam assist, plus autonomous emergency braking as standard. Leather upholstery with contrasting white stitching, heated, ventilated and electrically operated front seats, and a head up display are also included.

Kona Hybrid customers can choose from eight colours, including Galactic Grey as standard. For £565 extra, buyers can choose from Chalk White, Tangerine Comet, Blue Lagoon, Pulse Red, Lake Silver, Phantom Black and Acid Yellow. Inside, there are three colour packs; you can have the interior accents in orange, red or lime green.

The Kona Hybrid has a towing capacity of up to 1,300kg. All models come with Hyundai’s five-year/unlimited mileage warranty and roadside assistance package.
