There are four trim levels for the EQ ForTwo Coupe and EQ ForFour range, starting with the entry-level Advanced spec which is equipped with a seven-inch touchscreen, sat nav, DAB radio, Android Auto, Bluetooth, charging station finder, a multifunction leather steering wheel, climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, 15-inch alloy wheels and a 22kW charging system.

From the Premium trim level upwards, the Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio is offered starting from £20,420, with a FourTwo Coupe in the same specification costing £18,000. As standard all cars get black 16-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, a storage net for the centre console, stainless steel pedals and a panoramic glass roof which is replaced by a wind deflector in the Cabrio.

Step up to an Exclusive model, and full-LED headlights and taillights are standard, with the addition of improved fog lights with cornering function, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights and ambient interior lighting. There’s also a different black 16-inch alloy wheel design, heated front seats and a mixture of fabric and leather materials on the dash and door cards. Exclusive trim models carry an additional £1,105 price premium starting from £19,105.

At launch, both the Smart EQ ForTwo Coupe and Cabrio can be specified in Edition One Trim priced from £20,645 and £23,056 respectively. This gets the range-topping models Brabus styling extras including unique 16-inch alloy wheels, a bodykit with a front splitter, side sills and a rear diffuser, gloss black and red trim pieces and a new gear shift knob.

The tweaks to the front ends of the EQ ForTwo, EQ ForTwo Cabrio and EQ ForFour are the most noticeable changes. Instead of having two slim grilles, there’s now one large, gaping honeycomb radiator grille, with a couple of sportier-looking air intakes placed low down. The nose, with the Smart badge on, is now smooth and blank, highlighting its electric powertrain.

The interior has also received updates. As well as extra storage, there’s a new seven-inch infotainment touchscreen that provides all smartphone connectivity you could really ever need. Downloading the Smart EQ Control app means you can unlock the car, set the climate control, find parking spaces, see where you’ve parked and check the battery status remotely. There’s a system that should make retrieving a stolen Smart easier, and you can even download an augmented-reality app that shows you if and how you can fit items in the boot.

Smart has also introduced a range of connected services which can be operated from the user’s smartphone. This provides a car-sharing function, the ability to secure your car in the event of theft and a system that searches for available parking spaces.

Smart is the first mainstream manufacturer to get rid of petrol power from its entire range and offer electric models only. This means its cars will compete with the Renault ZOE, Peugeot e-208 and SEAT Mii electric when they’re all on sale. The electric powertrain is carried over from the previous EQ Smart range, which includes a rear-mounted electric motor that has an output of 80bhp and 160Nm of torque. All versions will achieve the 0-62mph time in around 12 seconds reaching an electronically limited top speed of 81mph.

At least 22kW fast-charging is included as standard in the UK, allowing you to recharge the 17.6kWh lithium-ion battery from 10 to 80% in under 40 minutes, or six hours using a wallbox at home. Claimed range is 91 miles from the EQ ForTwo, while a range of 90 and 87 miles are given for the EQ ForTwo Cabriolet and EQ ForFour respectively.
