Best 4x4s to buy in 2020

The Defender Hard Top takes its name from the early Land Rover Series models, and maximises rear storage space. Buyers can spec the optional front jump seat to make it a three-seater. Land Rover has said that buyers will be able to personalise the cargo area of their Hard Tops with toughened materials and clever storage solutions.

Land Rover Defender Hard Top 90 and 110: engines and chassis

The Defender 90 Hard Top features JLR’s D200 Ingenium straight-six diesel engine, which produces 197bhp. The larger 110 Hard Top can be specced with more powerful versions of the same engine. Each comes fitted with 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical assistance, with the base spec D250 producing 247bhp and the range-topping D300 producing 296bhp.

An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard across all models, along with intelligent all-wheel drive, a twin-speed transfer box and independent coil-sprung suspension. Buyers of the 110 model can choose electronic air suspension from the options list.

Both versions boast ground clearance of 291mm, along with a wading depth of 900mm. The 110 model will offer maximum approach, breakover and departure angles of up to 38, 28 and 40 degrees respectively when the off-road model is selected. Land Rover’s Terrain Response 2 system incorporates a new Wade mode, which helps drivers to traverse deep water safely.

Practicality, storage and payload

Every Defender Hard Top features a full-height partition to separate the flat rear load-space from the front passengers. Heavy-duty rubber floor mats are standard, along with six integrated lashing points to prevent items moving around. Both models feature 58 litres of lockable underfloor storage, with the 110 getting an additional 155 litres of hidden storage in the rear footwells. Upgraded interior lighting is also fitted, which is five times brighter than standard.

Both cars feature a side-hinged rear tailgate for easier access, and the rear door panels have been slimmed down to increase the available load space in both models. The 110 boasts a load space of 1,472mm long, 1,423mm wide and 947mm tall to offer 2,059 litres of total cargo space. In the smaller 90 model, cargo space is reduced to 1,355 litres in total, measuring 1,030mm long, 1,423mm wide and 937mm tall.

Total payload capacity varies depending on specification, with the 90 model capable of hauling a maximum of 670kg. The 110 can carry between 778 to 800kg.

Interior, technology and towing capacity

The new model’s interior and technology is shared with the standard Defender, with the three-door 90 model available only in ‘Defender’ spec with fabric upholstery and rubber flooring.

Buyers of the 110 model can pick from Defender, S, SE and HS trim levels, which include a range of exterior styling enhancements and different wheel choices. Mid-range SE spec cars come with Taurus imitation leather, with the range-topping HSE trim getting real Windsor leather trim.

All models feature JLR’s latest 10-inch Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen. This includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, and the ability to receive over-the-air software updates.

Land Rover’s ClearSight rear-view mirror technology also features. It’s capable of displaying the view from the rear of the car via a HD camera even when the rear load space is full.

The Hard Top models are capable tow vehicles as well, with a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg. Every model is equipped with Advanced Tow Assist, allowing the driver to steer a trailer using the rotary controller in the centre console. A 3D surround camera is also fitted, projecting a 360 degree view of the car to the infotainment screen, helping to make maneuvering easier.
