2022 BMW M3 Touring revealed

New M3 estate joins saloon in the high-performance car’s range

  • 503bhp and 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds
  • Costs from £80,550
  • First production M3 estate ever

The new BMW M3 Touring has finally been revealed in full, following years of teasers and half-reveals. It’s the first time the high-performance M3 model has ever been available with an estate car body shape, so BMW finally has a rival for the Audi RS4 Avant and the Mercedes-AMG C 63 Estate.

The BMW M3 Touring will make its first appearance at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed this week, as BMW reckons Britain will be one of the biggest markets for the car - UK customers love practical-but-fast models.

The BMW 3 Series Touring body shape has been pumped-up for this range-topping version, and the most obvious addition at the back are the four tailpipes and a more aggressive black lower section. The M3 also gets a larger roof spoiler, flared wheel arches and a set of ‘snowflake’ design alloy wheels.

At the front the M3 Touring is very similar to the M3 saloon. It has the huge kidney grille found on other models in the range including the M3 and M4, plus a body kit with flared wheelarches and optional carbon-fibre trim pieces. The M3 wheels are 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear, and there are powerful brakes and adaptive suspension fitted behind them, as on the M3 saloon.

At the core of the M3 Touring is the engine, which is the same as the M3 saloon: a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine with 503bhp. It uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox and BMW's xDrive four-wheel drive system, and can go from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds. This is about a tenth of a second slower than the M3 saloon, though both are limited to a top speed of 155mph unless you buy the M Driver’s Package, which raises that to 174mph.

The cabin is a lot like the one in the M3 saloon, and uses the latest tech from the recently updated 3 Series models. It has a curved infotainment display with a 14.9-inch central touchscreen combined with a 12.3-inch digital dial display, which gets all the features you need including sat-nav and phone connectivity. You can choose from normal sports seats or carbon-fibre bucket seats and from four different shades of leather for the upholstery.

The M3 Touring has 500 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place, and if you fold the rear bench down then there’s 1,510 litres of luggage space. That’s exactly the same as the normal 3 Series Touring, so there’s no space lost inside over a less sporty model. There’s even the same split-opening boot, where the glass on the tailgate can open separately.

The BMW M3 Touring will go on sale in September, and then construction of the new model will start in November. It will cost from £80,550, which is about £2,000 more than the M3 saloon.
