Honda e hatchback - Practicality & boot space

Rear-seat passengers don’t have all that much space in a Honda e, and the boot is very small

Most Honda e buyers are likely to have it as their second car, and that’s for the best. The Honda e isn’t particularly practical, especially if you regularly ferry your family and their belongings around, and you might struggle if you’re planning to have one as your only car. Of course, practicality and versatility aren’t the main priorities when designing a car like this, and most buyers will want the car for short journeys around town.

Honda e interior space and storage

We’ve no complaints about the space for front-seat occupants, as the standard panoramic sunroof and set-back dashboard make the interior feel spacious. It’s easy to get comfortable in the car, and the fabric upholstery has been chosen to make you feel like you’re sitting on a sofa.

Those in the rear seats won’t be quite as pleased, even if there’s more space back there than in a Peugeot e-208. Rear doors make access into the back seats easier than in a MINI Electric, but you’ll need to remember that there are only four seatbelts (like in many city cars). At least both rear seats do have ISOFIX child seat mountings.

The Honda e includes an adjustable centre console with a couple of handy storage areas. Under the connectivity sockets you’ll find an area with a slide-out cupholder, a phone storage tray and removable partitions. Larger water bottles fit nicely into the front door bins, while a regular-size bottle will fit into the rear door bins.

Boot space

With the rear seats upright, you’re limited to a mere 171 litres of boot space. You can blame the electric motor for this, as it’s located directly underneath the boot floor. While that’s enough for a few shopping bags or a couple of small suitcases, it’s a little disappointing, especially when rivals like the Volkswagen e-up! offer around 80 litres more space.

If you need more space, the rear seats fold down and create a flat floor to make loading easier. You don’t have to haul your shopping over a high lip, either, so filling up the boot won’t be too much of a challenge. There isn't quite enough underfloor storage to accommodate both charging cables, which come in storage bags, so this can eat into boot space. Most owners will probably choose to leave one or both at home unless they're needed during the journey.
