Toyota Aygo hatchback - Interior & comfort (2014-2022)

Quieter on the motorway, the Toyota Aygo is now a much better long-distance cruiser

The Toyota Aygo's engine makes a characteristic thrumming noise, and thanks to generous sound deadening and a smoother engine, this doesn’t become too wearing on longer journeys. Low wind and road noise at higher speeds is also most welcome. Under acceleration the engine note is rather pleasing – almost sporty.

Compared to the first Aygo, the interior finish of this model is much improved, making it a much nicer place to spend time, even if most of the plastics are unashamedly cheap and cheerful. Thankfully, the original model’s youthful appeal is still intact.

Toyota Aygo dashboard

The dashboard sports a swathe of trim that connects the air vents at either side, while an infotainment system stands in the middle. The controls in general are easy to use, and we like the stylish speedometer behind the wheel that also houses the rev counter and fuel gauge. The interior is only really let down by the look and feel of some hard plastics, which seem a bit cheap. Also, taller drivers may find it hard to get comfortable, as the steering wheel doesn’t have much adjustment.

Equipment

Every model offers a multifunction height-adjustable steering wheel, heated door mirrors, manual air-con and a wide range of customisable colours and panels. The entry-level x-play gets Toyota’s x-touch infotainment system (pictured) which includes DAB radio, Bluetooth, reversing camera and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Aygo x-trend model adds eight spoke 15-inch alloy wheels, contrasting coloured side sills, which are matched to accents on the front and rear bumpers and door mirror covers, automatic headlights, front fog lights, tinted rear windows and automatic air conditioning.

At the top of the range is the x-clusiv trim, which comes with unique 15-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, part-leather seats, keyless entry, push-button start and other Bi-tone colour choices. Additional safety equipment known as Toyota Safety Sense technology, which includes Pre-Collision System (Toyota’s terminology for Autonomous Emergency Braking) and Lane Departure Alert is now standard across all Aygo trim levels.

Options

It’s possible to enhance your Aygo with quite a few accessories, including Toyota’s ‘Fun-roof’, a power-operated canvas top that gives much of the effect of being in a convertible. The ‘Fun-roof’ can only be fitted to x-trend models though. You can add rear parking sensors to any model, plus protection packs (mud flaps, boot liners and the like).

If you’re feeling daring, decals can also be added to personalise your Aygo, along with bright metallic paint finishes.
