Cheapest to run (and our pick of the engine range) is the 113bhp 1.6-litre diesel. In the automatic Leon it sips diesel at just 57.6mpg with 109g/km CO2 emissions that mean a Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) company-car tax rating of 29%. There’s also a more powerful 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 148bhp, returning up to 55.4mpg.
Like the diesel models, all petrol-engined Leon STs come with a fuel-saving stop-start system, which pauses the engine when the car is at a standstill before restarting it seamlessly when you engage the clutch. In combination with hi-tech turbocharging technology, petrol Leon STs are economical enough to appeal to private buyers who cover fewer than 12,000 miles a year.
The small-capacity 1.0-litre, 113bhp petrol engine is modern, zesty and can return fuel economy of up to 58.9mpg – many will find it as cheap to run as the diesel and a CO2 emissions figure of 102g/km means a 22% BiK rating.
If you're after a punchier Leon ST, there's a 1.5-litre engine available with 128 or 148bhp, and a 2.0-litre with 187bhp. Any of these are powerful enough to entertain, but it’s worth noting that the smooth and punchy 2.0-litre engine will struggle to manage 40mpg – and will use even more fuel if you drive it hard.
All SEAT Leon STs are liable for road tax of £140 a year.
The Leon ST with the cheapest insurance premiums is the 113bhp 1.0-litre petrol model, which sits in group 12. The 2.0-litre diesel has the highest premiums in the standard range, in insurance group 24.
SEAT offers fixed-price servicing plans for two years or 20,000 miles for around £20 per month, or an upfront payment of just over £400.
The Leon’s warranty is pretty standard fare – SEAT will cover you for three years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes sooner. Paintwork is covered for three years and there’s a 12-year guarantee against rust. However, SEAT differs from the norm in that it offers a full two years’ breakdown cover as standard. You can pay an extra £250 to upgrade your cover to four years/75,000 miles, or an extra £450 to cover the car for five years/90,000 miles.
