Best insurance group 4 cars

Opting for a car in a low insurance group is one of the best ways to save money on your car insurance, without the need for other measures, such as fitting a black box. Insurance groups range from one to 50, with one featuring the cheapest cars to insure. 

Group four cars, whilst not as cheap to insure as groups one, two and three, should still be relatively affordable and are worth considering if you’re a young or recently qualified driver. You can find some of the insurance group four cars in lower groups too, but these are often entry-level models with less equipment. Winner of our 2024 Small Car of the Year award, the Skoda Fabia is not only a great small hatchback, but it’s cheap to insure too, with the entry-level SE Comfort model sitting in group four.

Its 74bhp 1.0-litre engine is nothing to write home about, but it serves the Fabia adequately as an urban runabout. Upgrading to the more powerful 1.0-litre TSI engine provides the Fabia with enough pulling power for easy overtaking, but it takes the hatchback into insurance group 10 – more expensive, but certainly still at the affordable end of the scale.

Making appearances in insurance groups one, two and three, there’s a Kia Picanto for everyone, no matter your insurance budget. The trim-level in this insurance group is the ‘GT-Line’ with a manual gearbox, costing £15,600. Counterintuitively, the more expensive automatic gearbox model is cheaper to insure (group three), along with the higher-spec ‘X-Line S’ model. 

Choosing the manual gearbox over the automatic version may result in a marginally more expensive insurance premium, but that trade-off earns you a nippier and more enjoyable driving experience. With an efficient 1.0-litre engine, 16-inch alloy wheels and an eight-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Picanto is an excellent city car for buyers looking for cheap insurance.
