New facelifted MG HS SUV on sale now

• New SE and Trophy trims cheaper than outgoing Excite and Exclusive models
• Extensively redesigned front end
• Available from launch with sole petrol engine

The MG HS has been given a mid-life refresh, with the brand’s largest SUV receiving an extensive front-end redesign, renamed trim levels and a slightly cheaper price tag.

Styling tweaks include a redesigned front bumper that gives the mid-size SUV a more aggressive look than before, but the most prominent change to the HS is its significantly enlarged and reshaped grille that’s flanked by a new set of sleeker looking LED headlights.

At the rear the car has been given a new bumper design with larger, angular twin exhaust tips and LED lights. The HS also gets a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels and an updated infotainment system that, according to MG, should provide “faster and smoother functionality”.

The old Excite and Exclusive trim levels are now gone, replaced with SE and Trophy specifications respectively. The entry-level MG HS SE starts from £23,495 – £60 less than the outgoing Excite model – and comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, built-in navigation system, air conditioning, reversing camera, parking sensors, automatic wipers and keyless entry as standard.

The top-of-the-range Trophy model starts from £25,955 (also £60 cheaper than the Exclusive trim it replaces) and adds heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, ambient cabin lighting, tinted windows and an upgraded sound system.

The MG HS comes with plenty of safety kit as standard too, including active emergency braking, pedestrian and bicycle detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, rear-traffic alert and blind-spot detection.

The sole engine remains the same for the updated MG HS; it’s a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol producing 160bhp. It’s paired with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but you can swap in an automatic transmission with both trim levels.

The plug-in hybrid version of the MG HS is yet to receive the same updates, but it will continue to be sold alongside the facelifted petrol model, which is available to order now.
