2020 Porsche 911 Targa on sale now

The latest Porsche 911 Targa has all-wheel drive and up to 444bhp

  • 911 range expanded
  • Targa models get a removable glass roof
  • First deliveries to start in summer

The Porsche 911 Targa is now available to order. The Targa joins the 911 coupe and fabric-roofed convertible, and Porsche predicts that around 20% of sales will come from the new model. Prices start from £98,170 and first customers should get their cars in August.

A Targa body style has been available for every generation of 911 since its introduction in 1965, and is characterised by a wraparound rear windscreen and a removable roof panel. In the latest model, the glass roof panel can be electronically removed and stored behind the rear seats in just 19 seconds.

Best drivers’ cars

All Targas sold in the UK will be all-wheel drive and there are two versions available. Both use the same turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine but the base Targa 4 has 380bhp while the Targa 4S gets 444bhp. Zero-to-62mph takes 4.2 seconds in the Targa 4 (with an optional Sport Chrono package fitted), and speccing the more powerful model means that time falls to 3.6 seconds. The top speed rises from 180mph to 189mph too.

An eight-speed PDK automatic gearbox is standard but 4S buyers can choose Porsche’s new seven-speed manual gearbox for no extra cost. The manual gearbox tends to be the enthusiast’s choice but we’d expect the manual 4S to be around half a second slower from 0-62mph than the automatic.

Elsewhere, you get adaptive dampers, Porsche’s ‘Wet Mode’ traction control setting and an electronically controlled rear differential. Targa 4 cars get 330mm brake discs and Targa 4S get 350mm discs. We’re told that the suspension and chassis have been tuned specifically for the Targa.

The Targa 4 features 19-inch alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear, while the Targa 4S adds an inch to each. As is the way with all Porsches, there’ll be plenty of customisation options for the 911 Targa models. Next month, a special edition model will be launched showing some of the many Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur extras.

While the Targa 4 starts from £98,170, you’ll need to pay £109,725 for the more powerful 4S version - exactly the same as the equivalent convertible models.
