Fancy building your own grand prix racer ahead of the new Formula One season in March?

The Lego Technic Grand Prix Racer 42000 set is new for 2013, and comes crammed with realistic details and functions.

Fans of Formula One will be disappointed to learn that it’s not a recreation of any of last season’s title challengers, but the model features an opening engine cover, so you can show off the V8 with its moving pistons.

You can also adjust the rear spoiler, as long as you’ve put the 1,141 pieces together correctly. There’s even independent all-wheel suspension, as well as fully functioning steering.

However, the car doesn’t come with electric power as standard. For that you’ll need to add the Lego Power Functions Motor Set, which costs an extra £59.99.

As with many Lego Technic sets, the Grand Prix Racer can be built up into an alternative design – in this case, a race truck with many of the same features.

The race truck is 19cm high, 45cm long and 22cm wide when built. In comparison, the Grand Prix Racer is over 12cm high, 61cm long and 25cm wide.

The new set looks great fun for children and adults alike, but Lego says it’s designed for kids aged between 11 and 16. It’s on sale exclusively at Argos until August, after which time it’ll be available from other retailers and through the Lego online shop,
