BMW decided to introduce the 6 Series Convertible several months before the 640i coupé version arrives in September this year to make the most of summer sales. Put them both side by side and there's little difference between them, but the addition of a raked roof arguably gives the 640i coupé a little more road presence. It's big, luxurious and well-rounded enough to take on competition from the Audi S5, the Jaguar XK and the Porsche 911.
Drive
The BMW 6 Series coupe is available with a choice of two 3.0-litre petrol or diesel engines and a hugely powerful 4.4-litre petrol V8, found in the 650i. The BMW 640d produces 309bhp, providing more than enough pulling power - it's capable of 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. The engine is super smooth though, and the 6 Series is very happy when it's cruising along at motorway speeds. You sit low, but the seats are soft, supportive and comfortable, while the cabin is very well insulated and consistently quiet on the move.
Comfort
Despite the 6 Series' sporty, coupé style, it's still very comfortable. It soaks up bumps on the road well and the driving position and supportive seats make it a very relaxing place to sit. If you add the optional Adaptive Drive package then the car's settings become adjustable, which means you can alter its set-up to be sportier when you want to have fun, or more comfortable when you just want a relaxing drive.
Reliability
The BMW 6 Series is a very new car, so it's difficult to tell exactly how reliable it will be. However, BMWs generally have a good reputation for reliability and, judging by the excellent build quality, problems are likely to be few and far between. It's worth trying out the many electrical components before you buy, though.
Practicality
It may be a coupé but the new 6 Series actually has a very large 460-litre boot. Its large overall size means that there's more than enough room for those in the front and a pair of big, deep, bucketed seats in the rear. Despite that, most adults will feel cramped in the back, so the rear is best left to children.
Value for money
A high price means that the 6 Series is competing with fellow premium rivals like the Jaguar XK. It really is quite expensive, to the point where just a few more thousand pounds will buy an entry-level Porsche 911, which is arguably more desirable. Also, Audi's S5 coupé, though smaller and less economical than the BMW offers the same mix of a premium badge, a powerful engine and a classy interior for much less.
Running costs
It's a big car with a big engine, so running costs are never going to be the best around. That said, the BMW 640d offers much better fuel economy than you might expect, with figures of 51mpg and 145g/km respectively. Petrol-engined models have far lower mpg figures and are much more expensive to run.
