Honda Civic Type R hatchback (2007-2010)
"The Honda Civic Type R is a hard riding, hot hatchback that looks unlike any of its rivals. But at speed it is uncomfortable and likes to drink fuel."
Pros
- Amazing engine and performance
- Fantastic hot-hatch handling
- Futuristic interior
Cons
- Becoming dated
- Rough ride at slow speeds
- Relatively high running costs
The Honda Civic Type R has a very committed and faithful fan base in the UK, over 35,000 examples of the previous model were sold in the UK. Enjoying sharp handling, a high revving engine and aggressive styling, Civic Type R buyers also require a practical, well-made hatchback that provides excellent everyday transport. This model, which is no longer on sale, features all of these traits but has improved looks, a practical, spaceship-inspired interior and even better handling. Joining the hot-hatch market alongside the Renaultsport Megane, Volkswagen Golf GTI and Mini Cooper S, the Honda Civic Type R has some strong credentials. The powerful 2.0-litre engine produces 198bhp and is capable of launching the Type R from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds.
MPG, running costs & CO2
When driven enthusiastically the Type R will drink fuel at an alarming rate. The official fuel economy figure of 31mpg is only achievable on longer journeys, keeping well below the Type R's ballistic 8000rpm rev limit. Road tax is also high for this class, as the hot hatch demands an annual road tax bill of £260. Servicing is not expensive however and residuals values should remain strong.
Engines, drive & performance
As soon as you climb into the Honda Civic Type R the bucket seats, sporty interior fabrics and central rev counter instantly hint at the performance on offer. Once underway it becomes very clear why the Type R has gained so many fans over the years. The handling is very impressive, the ride is firm but compliant over bumps and the engine just loves to be revved. Once past 5,200rpm all hell breaks loose as the i-VTEC system kicks in, hunting down the horizon and the 8,000rpm rev limit.
Interior & comfort
Although very competent at absorbing bumps at speed the Civic Type R's suspension can feel rock hard around town especially over broken road surfaces and potholes. It's a friendly long distance companion however thanks to low levels of road noise and very supportive seats.
Practicality & boot space
It's a tight squeeze for passengers climbing into the rear of the three-door-only Civic Type R, but the back seats offer plenty of legroom and the boot is huge. Measuring 485 litres the rear seats also fold completely flat in one go- a vastly superior system compared to the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The wide boot opening and additional underfloor storage make carrying large loads a breeze.
Reliability & safety
In standard form the current Honda Civic scored full marks during Euro NCAP crash testing in 2009, proving its competence in the event of an accident. Honda also deserve their reputation for legendary reliability as no specific problems have been reported on Type R models. Meanwhile in the cabin, a total of six airbags are fitted as standard.
Price, value for money & options
As the Civic Type R is no longer in production, there are some great discounts to be found at dealers, so shop around for unsold stock. Situated at the top of the range, the Type R is well equipped featuring climate control, cruise control, automatic wipers and foglights, all fitted as standard.
