When seeking to beat Audi and Volvo at their own game, it could be argued that Mercedes had a head start, as the E-Class is still one of the very finest estates money can buy. It has a fabulously designed interior bristling with up-to-date tech despite its well-ordered and straightforward layout. If anything, the changes made to the All-Terrain mean it’s an even more relaxing car to travel in. Its higher ground clearance, combined with generous tyre sidewalls, give it a slightly smoother ride than its regular estate sister, and though the ride isn’t high enough to give you an SUV-style raised driving position, road bumps and imperfections are dispatched without fuss or discomfort.

Clearly inspired by the flagship Mercedes S-Class saloon, the E-Class’ dashboard looks classy without being overly ornate or ostentatious; its highlights include fine details such as the die-cast metal ventilation nozzles and an inset analogue clock. The plastics used are all top-notch, coming very close – if not equalling – those in the Audi A6. The All-Terrain is further enlivened by details picked out in an aluminum-carbon look, along with stainless-steel pedals and special floor mats.

Among the standard equipment that comes with the E-Class All-Terrain is keyless go, power-folding mirrors, active parking assistance, an automated tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, roof rails, a tow bar, a power-adjustable driver's seat with memory function, a widescreen 12.3-inch dashboard display and a Burmester stereo.
Options
Key optional extras that can be specified on the All-Terrain include various shades of metallic paint and the 'Driving Assistance Plus' package, incorporating blind-spot assistance, braking assistance, active cruise control, speed-limi detection and lane-keeping assistance.
