The two Skoda Yeti models available from launch are designed to appeal to very different buyers. The green car you can see in our pictures is the ‘Outdoor’ option, with chunky bumpers and plenty of black plastic to save from scuffs and bumps on rough terrain. The white 'Yeti' car, however, will target urban buyers who value style over substance and prefer a classier look. Gone is the black trim, replaced by body-coloured bumpers and a sleeker front end.

Although there are two version of the new Yeti, there is no price difference between them. Both models cost from £16,600, about £800 more than the current model, and both come in S, SE and Elegance specs – though the Outdoor also comes in Laurin & Klement spec, costing from £25,490.

The Yeti's engine line-up remains unchanged, but you will be able to specify the seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox with the front-wheel drive 104bhp 1.6-litre TDI engine. What's more, the 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI will be available with four-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG automatic. Plus, some of the engines will be available will be lower emissions than before.

Standard equipment on the new Skoda Yeti 2014 includes 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, front foglamps, Bluetooth, ISOFIX child seat fixings, air-conditioning, CD player with MP3 compatibility and all-around electric windows. The Outdoor version also gets black protective plastic on the outside of the car and silver door mirrors.

Move up to the SE model and you get 17-inch alloy wheels, aux-in, climate control, headlight washers, a 6 CD changer, parking sensors and tinted windows. The Elegance model adds an auto-dimming main mirror, leather seats, hill start assist, automatic wipers and headlights that turn into the corner as you steer. The top-spec Laurin & Klement model comes with different alloy wheels, new carpets, sat-nav, DAB radio, a heated windscreen and various decorative features.

The new Skoda Yeti gets a redesigned front-end look, with bumper-mounted foglights in place of the previous prominent round ones. The car also gets a new grille, as well as a new style of Skoda badge in black and white.

The changes at the rear are more subtle, but a new set of light clusters and some stylish details taken from the new Skoda Octavia and Skoda Rapid hatchbacks are the most obvious updates. There are new alloy wheel designs, as well as four new metallic paint colours – Moon White, Jungle Green, Metal Grey and Magnetic Brown.

Inside, the 2014 Skoda Yeti gets a new three-spoke steering wheel, as well as new seat fabrics and updated decorative dashboard trims. All models still get the innovative VarioFlex rear seat system, which allows owners to individually fold or remove each of the rear seats to transform the Yeti into a practical load-lugging car.
