New Ford Mondeo 2014: What to expect
Price, release date and specs for the new Ford Mondeo, due on sale in 2014
The new Ford Mondeo release date is sometime towards the end of 2014, despite the fact that the car was announced at the Detroit Motor Show in 2012. This new version of the popular family hatchback will get the new wide grille from the latest Ford Fiesta, alongside a wide range of other visual and mechanical changes.
With its new range of engines and stylish looks, the new Ford Mondeo 2014 is likely to be a popular car in the UK. Read on for everything you need to know about next year's all-new Ford Mondeo.
New Ford Mondeo 2014 release date & price
Mark Ovenden, Ford UK's Managing Director, said that the new Ford Mondeo “will be with us in the final quarter of next year.” That means that we can expect the new Mondeo release date to be in late 2014, despite the car's early reveal in 2012.
The new Ford Mondeo price isn’t likely to move much from the current Mondeo's price point, as the new model will target the same section of buyers. However as the current model has had a price cut we expect the new model to cost a bit more, from about £19,000.
New Ford Mondeo engines
Engines in the new Ford Mondeo will include the usual petrol and diesel engines, but there will also be a new hybrid model that will really keep fuel and tax bills low.
The Ford Mondeo 2014 will come with the choice of two hybrid options. The Ford Mondeo Hybrid is a normal petrol-electric hybrid, which combines a petrol engine and an electric motor. This means the electric motor can drive the car at low speeds, saving fuel and improving emissions.
The Ford Mondeo Engeri is a plug-in hybrid, which means you plug the car into the mains electricity to charge the batteries. Plug-in hybrids can travel further on electric power alone, thereby increasing fuel economy. The Mondeo Energi plug-in hybrid can travel up to 20 miles on battery power alone, while the Mondeo Hybrid will only go for a few miles.
The Mondeo Hybrid will do about 65mpg and emit less than 99g/km, while you can expect fuel economy for the plug-in Mondeo Energi to be more than 100mpg – and emissions to be less than 50g/km. That means both hybrid versions will be free to tax.
The small 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine will also be available in the new Ford Mondeo, but despite the small capacity, it should have enough power to carry the larger family car along. A new 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol engine could also make it into the new car, although it is not yet clear if that engine will be available in the UK.
The rest of the engine range will be revealed closer to launch, but expect the 2.0 and new 1.5-litre TDCi diesels, plus 1.6 and 2.0-litre EcoBoost petrols too.
New Ford Mondeo specs and equipment
Six-speed manual gearboxes will be offered as standard in the new Ford Mondeo, with dual-clutch six-speed Powershift transmissions optional. A diesel model, with an automatic gearbox, will be offered with four-wheel drive for the first time.
The design of the new Ford Mondeo mirrors the new Ford Fiesta, with a wide Aston Martin-style grille and sleeker-looking headlights. The rear of the car gets near taillights as well as a sporty-looking lower bumper.
The new Mondeo will have an entertainment system called Ford SYNC that has been developed with Microsoft, which features smartphone integration and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Expect new safety equipment, too, including technology that can detect if the driver is getting tired, cruise control that automatically keeps a safe distance to the car in front and a warning system that alerts the driver if they switch lanes without indicating and if there is a vehicle in the car's blind spot.
Ford Mondeo Vignale
There will be a new Ford Mondeo Vignale too, a top-spec version of Ford's well-known family car with lots of premium features. This model will get 20-inch alloy wheels, new Vignale badges, chrome door handles, a new grille, a redesigned front bumper and new foglights.
The interior is the real focus of the premium Mondeo Vignale, however, and that includes quilted leather upholstery, abundant Vignale logos, luxury floor mats and soft-touch leather on the dashboard and steering wheel. The car also includes the Ford SYNC system, as well as LED headlights.
