The BMW 4 Series is based on the BMW 3 Series saloon, so it shares that car's high-quality interior and comfortable driving position. On M Sport models in particular, the suspension is quite firm, but the optional Adaptive Suspension gives you various settings, allowing you to choose a more comfortable or sporty ride as desired.

BMW 4 Series dashboard

The dashboard was given a very gentle update in 2017, with changes limited to detail improvements, like some of the chrome and gloss-black trim components. It still looks as crisp and tidy as ever – more businesslike and arguably more austere than the Mercedes C-Class.

It follows the usual BMW formula of great quality mixed with top-notch switchgear plus a logical and easy-to-use layout and you can choose Audi-style digital instruments as an optional extra. The dashboard itself is tastefully sculpted, while the tablet-style central screen is really smart.

A 6.5-inch screen is the centrepiece of BMW’s iDrive control system, with a larger 8.8-inch display provided on M Sport models. Its rotary controller is very easy to use once you get used to it, particularly the optional ‘Professional’ navigation upgrade with the same intuitive tile icons as seen in the latest BMW 5 Series.

Equipment

The BMW 4 Series isn’t a cheap car, but you do get a decent amount of standard equipment for your money. Now-entry-level Sport cars have sat nav, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, cruise control, DAB digital radio, leather seats, bright LED headlights, heated seats and rear parking sensors. So there’s plenty of practical, feel-good kit for high-mileage company-car drivers.

The Sport model also boasts 18-inch alloy wheels, swish ambient lighting, sports seats and a three-spoke sports steering wheel. Eye-catching dashboard inlays and unique exterior trim details ensure this version looks different inside and out.

The M Sport looks even sportier thanks to a body kit outside and M Sport detailing inside, while Individual leather upholstery and chrome exterior trim upgrades are available.

All models get BMW’s Drive Performance Control system, which allows you to adjust the steering, throttle (and, if you have an automatic gearbox or adaptive dampers, the gearshifts and ride quality) between ECO PRO, Comfort and Sport modes. This allows you to tune the 4 Series to your mood or the type of road you’re driving on.

Options

As with all of BMW’s high-end models, there’s huge scope to add extras to the 4 Series. There’s a host of option packages that bundle individual features together in areas such as media, safety, comfort and sport. There’s a vast array of metal, wood and high-gloss interior inlays, while hi-tech options include LED headlights, an aircraft-like head-up display, a reversing camera and in-car internet access.
