The whole point of cars like the Audi A5 Sportback is to combine sleek looks with everyday usability. The Sportback definitely looks the part, while the trade-off that comes in terms of interior space should be easy enough to live with for most.

Inside the A5 Sportback, front seat passengers get plenty of space and will feel pleasantly cocooned. It’s a bit of a shame the door bins are a bit small and fiddly to access, however, limiting the amount of clutter you can easily hide from view.

Things aren’t quite as rosy in the rear, where the sloping roofline slightly cuts into the headroom. Parents of teenagers may want to think twice before they buy, or at least bring their offspring along on the test drive to check they can fit comfortably.

With a pronounced transmission tunnel hump and high seat also to contend with, any middle-seat passenger will certainly feel hard done by. There’s definitely enough space for two younger children, though, and each of the two main rear seats have ISOFIX child-seat mounting points.

Boot space

The A5 Sportback’s rear passengers may not have as much room as they’d like, but the car’s hatchback configuration means it is practical for luggage and far more flexible than executive saloons such as the Mercedes C-Class. Total boot space is 465 litres – it's a similar amount to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe – and folding the rear seats reveals a pleasingly flat load area of 1,280 litres. There’s no under-boot storage facility, though, and the load lip is fairly pronounced.

Towing

Choose a 2.0-litre diesel engine and you’ll be able to tow a braked trailer of up to 1,900kg. Meanwhile, the petrols can tow from 1,700kg and there's a special bicycle rack on the options list.
