Volkswagen Beetle
The 'new' Volkswagen Beetle was launched in 1999, and started the craze for 'retro' cars that have been inspired by classic models, such as the MINI and Fiat 500. Unlike the original rear-engined Beetle, the modern version is based on the Volkswagen Golf, so the engine is at the front. The recent re-design has resulted in a much improved car with more rear headroom, better roadholding and striking looks. The interior is also much more practical and of higher quality.
- pros:
- Smart, sophisticated design
- Strong build quality and premium finish inside and out
- Excellent mix of performance and economy
- cons:
- Limited engine and transmission choice - for now
- Rear seats for small children only
- Boot space is good, but is smaller than a three-door Golf
The new Volkswagen Beetle retains the retro exterior styling of the previous model, but with a more angular, modern edge. VW has provided more interior space, especially in the back and smartened-up the dashboard, too. Built on the latest Golf's platform the latest Beetle is much more rewarding to drive and is a credible rival to the MINI and Audi A1. Later in the year, buyers will also be offered a high performance version that shares it's engine with the Volkswagen Golf GTI.
