The Volkswagen up! is a three-door city car with enough space for four adults. It features a small, efficient 1.0-litre petrol engine, with a fully electric version also on offer. It's smaller than rivals like the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107, but clever packaging and design means the Volkswagen up! offers the maximum amount of space from its small dimensions.
- Spacious interior
- Comfortable suspension
- No steering wheel reach adjustment
- Body roll in corners
- Automatic gearbox is jerky
The stylish Volkswagen up! goes head-to-head with city cars such as the Hyundai i10 and Kia Picanto. It's powered by a lively three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine, tuned to produce either 59bhp or 74bhp, and feels at home both in town and on the motorway. Designed with a highly adjustable interior and plenty of room for the whole family, the up! also offers very competitive fuel economy of 67mpg and emissions of less than 100g/km.
- Very cheap to run
- Quick off the lights and quiet
- Huge equipment list
- Very expensive
- Poor second-hand values
- Need a drive or garage for charging
The Volkswagen e-up! looks exactly the same as the normal Volkswagen up!, but it's got an electric motor in place of the petrol one. The e-up!'s asking price is high, however incredibly low running costs mean that could be recouped. Volkswagen has tried to rebalance the cost of the e-up by adding lots of equipment and it comes with every box ticked on the options list.
