Land Rover Discovery 4

The Land Rover Discovery 4 aims to offer something special to every driver: it's a comfortable luxury car, a convenient family hatchback and a serious off-road machine all at once. And very good at all those things it is, too. It's big and expensive, but its quality, luxury and comfort easily match the price. The latest model is so good and so comfortable it could just as easily be badged as a Range Rover.

4.5 /5
  • pros:
  • Beautiful, high quality cabin
  • Impressive luxury and comfort
  • Go-anywhere 4x4 ability
  • cons:
  • Fuel consumption not great
  • Some wind noise on the motorway
  • Massive, so tricky to move around town and park

Land Rover is branching out into two-wheel-drive cars with entry-level versions of the Freelander and Range Rover Evoque, but cars like the Discovery remain committed to delivering the ultimate in off-road performance. What's more, the Land Rover has a luxurious cabin that's a great place to sit for long periods of time. As a result, it's also a brilliant motorway car, and in our opionion the best luxury 4x4 money can buy in 2011. Expect running costs to be on the high side, despite the excellent 3.0-litre diesel engine.
