Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage has previously won Carbuyer's Car of the Year and Best 4x4 awards. Several years on, it's still one of our favourite cars of this type, even if newer models like the Nissan Qashqai are nicer to drive and cheaper to run. Even so, the exterior is very stylish and well proportioned, while the interior offers space for five and a huge boot. The Kia Sportage comes loaded with standard equipment and a choice of petrol or diesel engines. An automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive versions are also available.

The Kia Sportage is a rival for the Nissan Qashqai in the family crossover class. These cars mix the space and practicality of SUVs with the low running costs and driving manners of small hatchbacks. The Sportage looks more like an off-roader than the Qashqai and many other rivals, so it comes as no surprise that four-wheel drive is offered on top-spec models. But front-wheel-drive versions are the mainstay of the range, thanks to their 52mpg-plus fuel economy. The entire line-up has lots of equipment, stylish looks and the promise of inexpensive ownership, while Kia's seven-year warranty is another big plus.
